JUDGMENT OF RECORD ·
Amazon is giving up the app store to keep the assistant. Its new Alexa Tablets run full Android with Google Play, and Alexa+ reads the screen across apps.
On Oct 8 Amazon unveiled Alexa Tablets running Android 16 with Google Play, replacing Fire OS and its own Appstore on the line. Prices run from $229.99 for the 8 inch model to $499.99 for the 12 Pro. They ship Oct 14 in the US, Mexico and Canada. A spokesperson called it an all-new product line, not a rebrand. Alexa+ On-Screen Intelligence reads whatever app is open.
Amazon's own sale held up. Adobe counted $9.86B of US online spend during Prime Big Deal Days on Oct 6 and 7, up 8.5% per Modern Retail, with mobile at 52%. Numerator put average household spend on Amazon at $114, below $122 in June.
The layer moving is distribution. Amazon cedes the store, and the store cut, to Google on its own devices, and keeps the assistant that sits over every app. Control moves from the store to the agent layer. Distribution Capture governs. Confidence is Medium: launch facts agree across outlets, but Amazon has not said what happens to its Appstore.
