Agent shopping is forming a new checkout layer, and open payment rails are winning it over closed marketplaces.
Amazon blocked Meta's Muse shopping agent from its store on Sept 21. A day later Meta signed Shopify's Shop Pay and PayPal as checkout partners. Shopify shares rose 7% that day.
The layer moving is distribution. Agents now sit between shoppers and stores. Muse passed ChatGPT's early mobile pace, per Apptopia estimates Meta has not confirmed. Amazon's legal tools are limited after the Ninth Circuit ruled in August that users, not AI firms, access the site.
The governing signal is Distribution Capture. Neutral payment layers gain the agent checkout. Closed marketplaces must license access or lose agent traffic.
Amazon keeps the Muse block through Q1 2027 with no court order or licensed agent API, and Shopify reports no measurable agent channel sales in Q3 or Q4 2026.
