JUDGMENT OF RECORD ·
Shopify is making itself the checkout every shopping agent uses. Opening checkout to any browser agent moves the sale away from app store and ad gates.
Shopify opened checkout to browser based AI agents on Sept 28 across all eligible merchants, TechCrunch reported. Agents call three tools to read, edit and complete a checkout with buyer approval, instead of scraping pages, and settle through Shop Pay. Startup Fortune put the reach at over two million stores. Amazon is going the other way and blocks shopping agents.
Money and rivals moved toward agents the same day. Instinct, an agent that calls businesses and orders for users, raised $1B at a $10B valuation from Sequoia, Benchmark and Coatue on Sept 28. Meta launched an enterprise agent platform, including a WhatsApp business agent, and hired MongoDB's CEO to run it. MongoDB fell more than 18%.
The mechanism: whoever owns the agent's checkout call earns the payment fee without buying the ad. Merchants reach agents through one open interface. The layer moving is distribution. The governing signal is Distribution Capture.

WHAT WOULD PROVE THIS WRONG
Shopify reports by its Q2 2027 results that agent initiated orders are under 1% of gross merchandise volume, or it restricts agent checkout to named partners.
