JUDGMENT OF RECORD ·
Model labs now buy compute with a claim on the supplier. Anthropic's warrant for up to 5% of Akamai makes a CDN carry AI capex before revenue arrives.
Akamai announced an $11.6B, seven-year agreement with Anthropic on Sept 24, with an option for $9B more. Akamai expects about $5.5B of related capex, including $1.7B added in 2026 for supply pre-purchases. Anthropic gets warrants on 7.7M shares, about 5%, at $111.33. About 2% vests now and about 1% more per $3B of added purchases. Akamai left 2026 revenue guidance unchanged.
Capacity kept moving to named buyers the same day. Applied Digital confirmed a $3.2B, 210 MW campus in Brookwood, Alabama on Sept 24 for an unnamed investment-grade hyperscaler, with operations in 2028. Microsoft pledged over $10B for cloud and AI capacity across four Gulf states by 2030.
The mechanism: the buyer holds the scarce demand, so it takes equity on top of capacity. The supplier funds the build and waits for revenue. Margin upside shifts toward whoever controls demand. The governing signal is Profit Migration.

WHAT WOULD PROVE THIS WRONG
Akamai cuts its capex plan for the Anthropic commitment below $5.5B, or Anthropic lets the $9B expansion option lapse unused, before December 31, 2027.
