JUDGMENT OF RECORD ·
Shopping assistants are becoming ad inventory, not checkouts. Amazon sold sponsored Alexa conversations Sept 30, and ChatGPT added try-on after dropping checkout.
At unBoxed on Sept 30, Amazon launched Branded Conversations, letting brands guide multi turn shopping chats in Alexa for Shopping. It also merged its DSP and Ads Console into Amazon Ads Agent, a conversational buying tool. On Oct 1 OpenAI added virtual try-on and a favorites library to ChatGPT shopping worldwide. TechCrunch reports OpenAI had dropped an instant checkout feature that underperformed.
Subscriptions will not carry these assistants. Only about 2% of US households pay for an AI service, per PNC data cited in an Oct 2 report, against 91% for streaming. As context, OpenAI opened ChatGPT ad buying to Shopify merchants in September.
The layer moving is distribution. The assistant that answers the shopping question decides which product appears, and sells that slot. Distribution Capture governs. Confidence is Medium: launches are on company pages, but no assistant has disclosed ad revenue.
