Pentagon AI demand has outrun its compute. About 1.7M personnel have used GenAI.mil, and officials say capacity is short.

Officials said on Sept 23 that about 1.7M of roughly 3M personnel have used GenAI.mil, with about 500,000 daily users. That is up from about 80,000 users at the start of the administration. The chief digital and AI officer said the department lacks the compute capacity.

The day before, officials said Maven passed 100,000 users. Adoption is no longer the constraint. Compute and classified hosting are.

Budget authority lags. A continuing resolution runs to Dec 11 and the FY27 NDAA is stalled. The governing signal is Interface Shift. Figures come from one outlet quoting officials, so confidence is Low.
